GCN 2 (Pitcairn) · 2013
The R9 M290X was a mid-range mobile GPU built on AMD's GCN 2 "Pitcairn" design, with 1280 cores and 4GB of GDDR5 over a comparatively wide 256-bit bus for its 2013 release - generous memory bandwidth for a laptop chip of that time. That gave it solid 1080p gaming performance at medium-to-high settings in the titles of its era.
Running at 55W, it needed a proper gaming laptop chassis rather than a thin ultraportable. It's long since been surpassed by multiple GPU generations, but the wide memory bus was a notable strength relative to other mobile GPUs released around the same time.
Everyday display output, browsing and office work.
4 GB GDDR5 memory.
Push performance beyond base clock.
Soldered (Mobile)
Lower-power laptop GPU built for thin-and-light designs.
The AMD R9 M290X is a basic / integrated-class dedicated GPU with 4GB of GDDR5 memory, suited to light gaming and general-purpose display output.
