Ada Lovelace · 2023
The RTX 4060 is the GPU most mid-range gaming laptops settled on in 2023, and for good reason: its 3072 Ada Lovelace cores and 8GB of GDDR6 are enough to push 1080p at high settings in nearly everything, with DLSS 3 frame generation covering the gap in the handful of newer titles that ask for more. It's also the first tier where ray tracing stops feeling like a checkbox feature and starts being genuinely usable without crushing the frame rate.
The catch is how much a single model name can hide. NVIDIA lets laptop makers configure this chip anywhere from 35W to 115W, and a 35W variant in a thin-and-light will trail a 115W version in a gaming chassis by a wide margin - sometimes 30% or more in the same game. If you're comparing two laptops that both say "RTX 4060," check the wattage before assuming they perform the same.
The DLSS 3 frame generation mentioned above is specifically the jump from DLSS 2: a dedicated Optical Flow Accelerator interpolates entirely new frames instead of only upscaling rendered ones, while still carrying over Super Resolution, DLAA, and Ray Reconstruction. Resizable BAR support rounds things out, letting the CPU access the full 8GB of VRAM at once instead of in smaller chunks.
