Ada Lovelace · 2023
NVIDIA's mobile RTX 4070 brings Ada Lovelace to gaming laptops with 4,608 CUDA cores, 8GB of GDDR6, and a 128-bit bus providing 256GB/s of bandwidth - a different, more power-efficient configuration than the desktop 4070. DLSS 3 frame generation makes 1440p gaming with ray tracing a realistic target in a thin-and-light-ish chassis.
As with other mobile RTX chips, laptop makers tune this GPU's power limit to fit their own cooling - 115W here is a typical configuration rather than a hard spec, so two laptops both sold with an "RTX 4070" can perform differently depending on how each one is tuned.
The jump to DLSS 3 over the previous DLSS 2 generation is what makes 1440p with ray tracing realistic in a laptop this size: on top of Super Resolution, DLAA and Ray Reconstruction, a dedicated Optical Flow Accelerator generates extra frames rather than just rendering faster, and the chip's hardware ray tracing cores give that reconstructed lighting something real to work with.
Laptop manufacturers configure this GPU's power limit (TGP) per model. The 115W figure above is a typical point within the chip's published TGP range - actual power limits, and real-world performance, can vary significantly between laptops using the same GPU name.
