Intel Core 12th Generation · Alder Lake-U
The Intel Core i7-1265U is a 15-watt mobile processor from Intel's 12th Generation Core family, codenamed Alder Lake and launched in the first quarter of 2022. Built on the Intel 7 process, it was designed for thin-and-light laptops and business ultrabooks, where sustained efficiency and battery life matter as much as peak speed. In the Core i7 U-series it sits just above the i7-1255U, with a slightly higher boost clock for responsive everyday work.
The chip uses Intel's hybrid architecture, combining 10 cores in total: two Golden Cove performance cores and eight Gracemont efficient cores. Only the performance cores support Hyper-Threading, which gives 12 threads overall. The performance cores run from a 1.8 GHz base up to 4.8 GHz with Turbo Boost, and the efficient cores reach 3.6 GHz. The cores share 12 MB of Intel Smart Cache, and Intel lists a 15 W base power with a short-term maximum turbo power of 55 W, so real-world speed depends heavily on how each laptop maker tunes its cooling and power limits.
For graphics the 1265U includes Intel Iris Xe with 96 execution units running up to 1.25 GHz, which handles high-resolution video, multiple external displays and light creative work. It supports DDR5-4800, DDR4-3200, LPDDR5-5200 and LPDDR4x-4267 memory in two channels, up to 64 GB, and offers PCIe 4.0 from the processor with up to 20 lanes and Thunderbolt 4 support. It is also eligible for Intel vPro, and the package is a soldered FCBGA1744 part, so it is never user-replaceable.
In practice the 1265U suits office productivity, web browsing, video calls, coding and light photo or video editing, and the eight efficient cores help it hold up well in multitasking and background workloads. It is not a gaming or heavy rendering chip: its low power ceiling and integrated graphics place it well below H-series processors. Buyers should compare laptops on cooling design and memory configuration, because dual-channel memory and a generous sustained power limit make a noticeable difference to performance with this processor.
