What RAM amount actually matters in 2026 - 8GB vs 16GB vs 32GB for everyday use

Feels like every budget laptop is still shipping with 8GB. For normal browsing + office work, is that actually a bottleneck now, or is 16GB only needed once you start gaming/editing? Curious what people have actually noticed switching from 8 to 16.

Went from 8 to 16 last year and the difference was mostly about how many Chrome tabs I could leave open without it grinding to a halt. Pure browsing+office with light multitasking, 8GB was usually okay until it wasn't.

That's exactly the pattern I keep hearing, fine until you have 15 tabs plus a Teams call running.
