144Hz vs 165Hz vs 240Hz panels on a gaming laptop - when does it stop mattering?

Jumped from a 144Hz panel to a 240Hz one recently and honestly struggled to tell the difference outside of competitive shooters. Curious where people think the real-world returns start diminishing - is 165Hz basically the sweet spot?
